The vehicle to accomplish this vision is sense of family and community of each individual. Altruism must overcome mortal apathy. For the record, Isaac Asimov wrote a status report about this quest 10,000 years in the future. 'Foundation' trilogy.
I live on the ocean but I see the similarities. Space is the new sea that will stump explorers for centuries. The mentality of sailors and astronauts are similar. Both are risking their lives for mankind’s sake
I have already put my mark up in orbit by being part of the design team for the ion thrusters on the GOCE mission and also BepiColombo, currently on its way to Mercury. The thrusters on GOCE put the UK, just for a moment, above all other plasma thruster technologies in space. It was the most finely controlled thruster yet built.
But all we got was a pat on the back. That was a wake up call that if we truly want to go for space we need serious people continually striving. We’ll meet large amounts of disaster but onwards we must go. The real breakthroughs will be having large powerful and long-lasting power sources so that we can spend more time building on Earth and Space. We do have radiogenic thermal generators but they aren’t kW or MW.
This presupposes that the real estate we must expand our SPECIES presence to in order to survive the (predictably recurring and well documented) events which have "simplified" our biosphere in the past IS NOT ALREADY SOMEONE ELSE'S HOME.
If I were an older space capable intelligence, I'd want to see a bit more maturity before letting us out of the nursery... I had a strange dream about this a while back, might have posted it in a note here. Looking.

We are ugly monkeys whose survival is based on our willingness to kill other ugly monkeys and steal their food.
Let it end here. The universe is a vast and beautiful place. Let’s not be the ones to fuck it up this time.

I'm keeping hope alive that I will one day go up to space. And if not, well, I'm sending my ashes there!

We’ll need those in the long term.
